In my late 20s, I found myself struggling with challenges that I couldn’t quite articulate. My life seemed to be spiraling towards an unhealthy me, and I often felt that I hadn’t achieved much. Yet, despite everything, I continued to push through each day. One day, while aimlessly browsing the internet, I stumbled upon some videos about marathon runners. The fact that only 1% of people worldwide complete a marathon intrigued and motivated me.
I shared my newly found ambition with friends, and many couldn’t believe it. Some thought it was just another one of my impulsive idea. Initially, even I thought this was a fleeting impulse. Until that point, I was only running on the treadmill sometimes with no structured plan. Then one day, I decided to take my run outside. I ran 2-3 kilometers and felt an incredible rush. This motivated me to run every morning, and soon I was running 5 kilometers almost daily.
However, running without proper knowledge and structure led to minor ankle and knee overuse injuries. After some research and recovery, I came back stronger and more determined. I signed up for my first half marathon in Katherine and began increasing my long runs. I was thrilled to complete the half marathon, despite not caring about the timing. The achievement was in running the distance. My beautiful wife framed the medal and the bib from the event as this was such an important achievement for me. Receving this gift on my anniversary made me really happy and motivated me even further.

After this experience, I realized that with proper structure, I could achieve even more. I signed up for the Sunshine Coast Marathon and started a structured training regimen. I now love every run and feel great after my longest run of 30 kilometers.
Reflecting on my journey from sitting on the couch, chugging beer, and following unhealthy habits to running half marathons and training for a full marathon, I believe that if I can do it, anyone can. This transformation has not only improved my physical health but also my mental well-being, proving that with determination and structure, remarkable changes are possible.
